Spare Tire or Steering Wheel?
Is God your spare tire or your steering wheel? Might sound like a strange question until we really think about what it’s asking?
Is God leading each twist and turn of our lives
or do we keep him in the trunk of our life, in case of emergencies?
Before you recoil and think “God in the trunk? Of
course not!” pause.
What do we know about our spare tire?
Well, we don’t think about it often, but we know it’s there.
When we need it we go to it.
It gets us to where we need to be, until we replace it with something else.
This can be the way we handle our faith too.
We sometimes wait until we have spiritual blowouts
before we reach out to God, instead of letting him drive our lives to begin
with.
"But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you."
-Matthew 6:33
Are we seeking Him first
or waiting until we think we truly need Him?
For some there is the sad reality that without trials and
tribulations they might not seek God at all.
If we’re honest, isn’t it true that we can tend to be more willing
to let Him drive us out of situations, when we’re in deep water, than to give
him a permanent place at the wheel?
I can say personally that the times in my life that I have felt
God the most, have been the times I have been in the greatest need. The reality is,
that isn’t when He decided to show up,
but that’s when I noticed He was there.
That’s when we notice He’s been there all along, but we don’t see
Him until there is a need. Like a spare tire.
Who’s driving your life? Can you relate more to God driving your
life or acting as the spare tire? Why do you think that is?
Is God your steering wheel or your spare tire? Does that question
bother you? Why do you think that might be?
Take some time to be honest with yourself and your heavenly
Father. Sit with these questions and see what you might learn.
“Seek his will in all you do,
and he will show you which path to take.
Don’t be impressed with your own
wisdom.
Instead, fear the Lord and
turn away from evil.
Then you will have healing for your body
and strength for your bones.”

3:6-8
