The Spirit of Christmas
The Spirit that comes upon Mary to bring the conception of Christ echoes the Spirit that hovered over the waters in the account of creation. Take a peek at Genesis 1:2.
“The earth was
formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God
was hovering over the surface of the waters.”
The earth was
void and without form in the beginning just as Mary’s womb was void until the
Spirit filled it with the Son of God.
Our lives are
void without the presence of Jesus in them. We feel that void and try desperately
to fill it with all the wrong things at times; frustrated by the fact that our
own personal world seems formless and empty.
Darkness covers
the deep waters of our lives without Jesus, but yet The Spirit hovers close
over the surface of our emptiness awaiting an invitation to enter.
When we invite
the Lord into our lives the darkness is overcome.
“The
light shines in the darkness,
and the
darkness can never extinguish it.”-John 1:5
God speaks into our lives “Let there be light”
and we are covered with its glorious brilliance.
Gods Word is a word that conceives life through
the Holy Spirit.
Not only does God bring light, but He plants a
seed of hope into baron places. We see God fill Elizabeth’s womb with a baby. A
womb that was in earthly understanding “too old” or “past it’s ability” to conceive
and carry a child.
“They had no
children because Elizabeth was unable to conceive, and they were both very old.”-Luke
1:7
Mary and Elizabeth were both impossibly pregnant.
The circumstances of their lives told them that new life was not possible.
What are the circumstances of your life? Are they
telling you that new life is not possible?
During this glorious time of Advent remember that
the Spirit of God hovers over our lives pursuing us with prevenient Grace. Have you invited Him into your life? Have you
invited God into your seemingly impossible circumstances and empty places?
God is the Creator and his most encompassing
creation is human life.
A baby. A
life filled with potential. A creation filled with possibilities. You.
As we light our Advent candles and sing our
joyous songs, let’s also open our hearts and invite the Holy Spirit to fill us
and work in us this Advent season and beyond. May we live lives that continue
to sing “Glory to the New Born King” far beyond this Christmas season.
Hark!
The herald angels sing"Glory to the new-born king
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled"
Joyful all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With angelic host proclaim
"Christ is born in Bethlehem"
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the new-born king"
